The wait is almost over for the eagerly anticipated Futuresource 2010 event which is taking place at London ExCeL, 15 - 17 June. The international conference and trade fair is organised by the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management (CIWM) and the Environmental Services Association (ESA) and has been hailed as Europe's largest sustainability event.
The show, now in its 2nd year, is expected to attract around 350 exhibitors and covers everything from traditional waste management services to new technologies for renewable energy. One of the most interesting and well represented areas of the show this year is the Plant & Vehicle Zone, where leading OEMs are showing the very latest 'green machines', providing solutions to economic and environmental challenges in the automotive and material handling sectors.
A new innovation taking centre stage this year is the ZEV Zone, an interactive demonstration arena dedicated to low and 'zero emission' vehicles and plant for the waste and recycling sector. Visitors will be able to inspect the new equipment, see it in action and test their operating skills on a number of the vehicles.
Public and private sector waste and recycling activities are ideal applications for low carbon transport and handling equipment, which prompted the organisers of Futuresource to introduce the new demonstration arena and showcase some of the very latest solutions.
"Concern about emissions and growing traffic congestion, particularly in urban areas, means that more compact and 'environmentally friendly' collection vehicles, materials handlers and sweepers are the way forward. What better place to see these machines in action than at Europe's leading sustainability event," says CIWM chief executive Steve Lee.
The new ZEV Zone will have something for everyone, from materials handling to street cleansing. One of the star attractions will be the new all-electric Solmec 360 materials handler. This is very the first time this Italian-built unit has been seen in the UK. At the other end of the scale will be road-going electric vehicles from specialist manufacturers such as Bradshaw, who will have the FB3 3-tonne platform truck on display amongst other models, right down to the Zally's labour saving electric dumpers that are ideal for transporting waste materials without physical effort and the Piktou electric street cleaning machine from Trafalgar Cleaning Equipment.
Another exciting exhibit will be the Johnston Sweepers prototype compact electric sweeper, which is still under development; visitors will be invited to view the new machine and encouraged to comment on the model.
With a record number of new products, including hybrid drive RCVs and the newly announced diesel electric transmission on the Caterpillar D7E machine for landfill operations, Futuresource 2010 will be the place to visit to see what waste and recycling kit will look like in the future!

E H Hassell & Sons (stand N10) is using Futuresource to launch to the UK market the Sennebogen 818 recycling machine, which has an operating weight of 19.5 tonnes. Maximum operating flexibility is achieved with the extremely compact and robust design. Sennebogen claim that with a rear end radius of just 2.3 m and a total width of 2.5 m, the 818 is an enormously versatile machine that is easy and light to manoeuvre and transport and impresses with its high performance potential, even in very small spaces.
Liebherr-Great Britain (stand P14) will have on display two materials handling machines, specifically designed and built for municipal and commercial waste management, transfer stations and recycling operations.
The A 316 Litronic is a wheeled materials handler featuring a hydraulically elevating cab, a 3.5 m stick and a 5.5 m industrial boom for lift height and long reach capabilities. Also on the stand is the Liebherr L 528Z2plus1 - an articulated, hydrostatic drive machine in the 11 tonne operating weight class, with a tipping load of just over 8 tonnes.
JCB (stand P11) will show three of the 25 model Wastemaster range: the extremely popular and unique Teletruk 35D, a 416HT wheeled loading shovel and a JS160W wheeled excavator complete with hydraulically raised cab.
The Teletruk 35D is a 3.5 tonne capacity forklift, and the unique telescopic boom design offers many more advantages than conventional FLTs. Fitment of a Quickhitch ensures maximum versatility, enabling compatible attachments such as buckets, grabs and fork rotators to be utilised.
The JS160W wheeled loading excavator will be shown with a hydraulically raised cab for greater operator visibility when loading into high-sided containers. To meet the arduous demands of the sector, the machine also features a wide core radiator, fire extinguisher, re-fuelling pump, front screen guard, P3 Cab air intake filter, a heated suspension seat and an air-conditioned cab and can be fitted with 'street pads' to protect asphalt surfaces.
Also on show from the JCB wheeled loading shovel range is the JCB 416HT Wastemaster, which is ideal for working in restricted sites, particularly when loading sorted waste in picking station bays.
Finning Caterpillar (stand M38) is promising an exciting display of a number of specially adapted waste handling machines. The machine that will take centre stage on the company's stand will be the new D7E electric drive dozer. The firm reports that the D7E uses 10 to 30 per cent less fuel and, on average, moves 10 per cent more material per hour than its industry-leading predecessor, the Cat D7R. The new D7E Waste Handler blends the efficiency of the D7E with features that allow it to take on harsh landfill applications with best-in-class performance, durability and economy. The noise levels have also been dramatically reduced by 50 per cent.
Solmec (stand N42) is showing its revolutionary new 106ZE model, which according to Solmec, "is already in the future". The Solmec 106ZE is the first ever rehandling machine which is completely electric-powered, the first crane of its kind.
With 'zero emissions', the 106ZE is able to work indoors with poor or even no ventilation. It can also work within explosive environments and recycling yards. As the machine is electric-powered, and therefore quiet, it raises the option of a double shift in residential areas with noise limits.
Volvo Trucks (stand P59) will be showing its new UK specific 26-tonne low-entry cab, the FE LEC, as well as promoting its complete range of municipal chassis, mainly from the lighter-weight FL and FE ranges.
Dennis Eagle (stand P30) recently launched its first new refuse vehicle body design for eight years and will be showing the new range of bodies at Futuresource. The new Olympus builds on existing models used by the firm, which specialises in waste collection vehicles, and has been designed to allow variable compaction control from the driver's cab, enabling operators to select different pressures according to the type of material collected.
Bradshaw (stand J18) is the largest UK manufacturer of industrial electric vehicles. One of the models on show at Futuresource will be the FB3 3-tonne platform truck. The vehicle design utilises an automotive differential and provides the most reliable drive train in the industry and is complete with fully adjustable controller giving regenerative dynamic braking and speed management.
Multicar UK (stand Q30) will show its new Multicar Fumo 3 axle 4x4 carrier vehicle fitted with a demountable compactor (7.45 tonne GW). Also on the stand is the Trilety TXK demountable compact sweeper on the Multicar Tremo Carrier, with winter equipment from Fiedler & Reinex.
A new version of the successful Axtec On-board axle load indicator is being shown by Axtec (stand M59). The latest model comes with a range of new options, including an in-cab display connected to a rear view camera. When reverse gear is selected, the standard display is automatically replaced by the view from the reversing camera. A second key improvement is the ability to connect the unit to a tracking device so that information on overloads can be passed in real time direct to the traffic office.
The UK's only fuel management consultancy, Economy Tuning (stand Q38), will be using the event to show off their new anti-idling technology. The company is marketing a device which automatically turns an engine off after five minutes if it is left idling, offering significant potential fuel savings especially when spread across a fleet of vehicles.
Vehicle Weighing Solutions (stand N58) will be showing examples of its range of systems at this year's show, including the recently launched M350S; a very capable, compact onboard weighing and axle overload indicator. Also on display is the new LoadWeigh-CAN and the Enviroweigh, a versatile wheeled bin weighing and RF identification system for dynamically weighing the contents of bins.
Farid Municipal Vehicles (stand M18) is showing a whole new concept in recycling in the form of the Micro-Duo, which has two 100 per cent fully sealed leak proof compartments - a body and pod. This allows flexibility to collect food waste in one compartment, whilst collecting dry recyclables separately in the other.
Terberg Matec UK (stands M20 and N20) is back at Futuresource with additional stand space and is showcasing a very different product from its design team in the shape of the KTZ underground and over-ground waste collection and transportation system. Terberg says the KTZ system offers a safe, reliable one-man operation solution for the collection of street and domestic waste or recyclables. The system provides a range of underground and over-ground containers that are designed to work in sync with the KTZ collection vehicle.
On stand N20, Terberg is also showing the Kerbsider® Combi TD, which offers complete, "at the kerbside" segregation of food waste and dry recyclable fractions, providing a single vehicle solution for collection duties that might ordinarily require two vehicles and crews.
Geesink Norba (stand P19) will be showing off several highly efficient and versatile products at Futuresource. Among them will be the company's S500 lift launched last year which has already won a number of new customers. Perhaps most impressive of all is the speed at which the remarkable S500 lift operates. In automatic split mode, the company says it beats the lifting times of any dedicated split lift on the market.
Scarab Sweepers (stand P29) will have three machines on display at this year's show. The first is the Scarab Minor, a 3.5 tonne compact road sweeper, which, according to Scarab, is the most versatile urban/precinct sweeper in the world. The Minor has a hopper capacity of 2.0 cubic metres and is fitted with large access doors on either side. The water tank holds 420 litres and the vehicle also comes fitted with a wander hose to clean awkward areas or gulleys.
The Scarab Merlin XP, mounted on a Daf chassis, will also be on display. The truckmounted sweeper has been specifically designed to maximise the payload potential of the 7.5 tonne class sweeper, achieving almost half a tonne 'Xtra Payload' over its competitors.
Scarab is also the UK agent for Mathieu products and will be bringing the Mathieu Azura compact sweeper to Futuresource. Mathieu claim that the Azura is one of the most powerful compact road and precinct sweepers. It is powered by a VM Motori 3.0 litre turbo-charged Euro 4 diesel engine, with high-pressure direct injection (HDI) which significantly reduces exhaust emissions. Scarab will also be showing its new control and diagnostic system, the CANbus 3.
Mechanical sweeper manufacturer Dulevo (stand N28) also boasts a new 'zero emission' machine. According to the company, the 5000 Zero is the only mechanical sweeper in the world that runs on methane. The sweeper also guarantees minimum noise emissions, no emission of dust into the atmosphere, and no pollution - an absolute dream machine for local authorities!
For many visitors, Futuresource will be the first chance to see Johnston Sweepers' (stand N18) brand new CN101 1 cubic metre lightweight sub compact sweeper. The new model is a manoeuvrable and versatile, and is ideal for sweeping in urban and pedestrian areas where space is confined. As well as superior sweeping performance, the company says it offers low ownership costs because the simplicity of its design allows for long service intervals.
Other companies to look out for in the Plant and Vehicle zone at this year's Futuresource include, Mitsubishi Fuso Truck, Mercedes, BMC, CMS SupaTrak, Ecofar, Garwood Europe, Heil Europe and Municipal Vehicle Auctions.
